This past week has been absolutely gorgeous.  A beautiful weekend filled with the Maverick’s Contest, Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day and the start of Mardi Gras and it keeps coming.  A comfortable 70 degrees on the Coast, perfect  hammock and tanning weather.  This is why we live here.   Stay with us soon and experience this gem of a community only 20 miles south of  San Francisco.

Sunny and Stormy and Birds too!

Beach House 003

Well the storms have been coming in, but nothing too intense.  Today is a nice mix of sunny and stormy.  Not often can you feel the sun’s heat and the cool rain in the same moment.  I saw some birds today on the bluffs above the Beach House.  The first couple pics are of a Great Blue Heron which I used to almost never see, but now see quite frequently.  At least a hand full in the past month in this area.

The second bird is a raptor of some sort.  I’m not a birder, but it appeared to be larger than the red-tailed hawks that abound in this area.  The coloring is different as well.  If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Well we had a nice respite between the storms, but rainy days have come again.  The Storm shouldn’t be too bad this time around, although it sure is windy.  Stay warm everybody.

Sunset pictures for a Rainy night.

December 29th, 2009

Well it’s a rainy night here on the Coastside so I thought I’d post some beautiful pictures of recent sunsets to warm us all up.  Rain or shine the sunsets are gorgeous.

The first two are from Poplar State Beach in Half Moon Bay,

The First real big storm of winter should be hitting sometime tonight.  There are few things as enjoyable as watching a winter storm roll of the Pacific and smash into the shore.  Especially when you can do it from the comfort and warmth of our beach vacation rentals.  Everything is battened down and ready to roar.  Bring it on Mother Ocean!!!

Walk to the Beach from the Chalet

November 17th, 2009

The Holidays are right around the corner and so is the beach.  After a big holiday feast, it has always been tradition here on the Coast to take a walk down to the Beach.  Lately the weather has been great.  So in anticipatory honor of the festivities ahead I take you on a walk to the beach from the Chalet, your vacation retreat available for the holidays.

We will be heading to the Treeline in the back.

I included a lot of pictures and it may look like a longer walk than it is.  In reality it takes about 7-10 minutes to get to the beach itself.

We start by heading through the pine trees on the left.

Through the Woods there is a Gate

Through the Gate

Through the Gate and right, and we begin the short walk along Cypress St.

Down Cypress

As you walk down cypress there is a nursery on the right and flower fields on the left

Cypress will cut a hard left, we go through

Through the sharp Left

From here you can just head straight to the steps that lead to the beach or head to the right and explore the bluffs.  All of this area is part of the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, which is a protected area.  Visit the Friends of Fitzgerald website at  www.fitzgeraldreserve.org/

For the tour, we’ll head right and take a walk in the woods before getting to the Beach.

Along the Treeline we saw from the Chalet

SEAL Cove N.

This particular beach is known as Seal Cove, in honor of the seals that often lay out on the rocks by the reef marker.  Some nights, back in bed at the Chalet, you can hear them barking above the crashing of the surf.

November walk to the Beach

November 17th, 2009

It is the middle of November and still beautiful in the San Francisco Bay Area, especially on the Coastside.  Let’s take a walk to the beach from each of our vacation rentals.  Let’s start at the Beach House.

Well that was quick.  I guess that is why we call it the Beach House.

Summers in full swing at the coast

August 20th, 2009

Here we are in mid August on the beautiful San Mateo coast.  I hope you have taken the time to explore  all the wonderful opportunities we have here to enjoy. Just take a stroll on the wooded bluffs at the Fitzgerald Marine preserve and you’ll see healthy tide pools loaded with living sea creatures, seals, pelicans and abundant wildlife that we are so lucky to have at our fingertips.

Drop by the Montara lighthouse just to breath the salty sea air and scope out the outrageous grounds with the wide open sea as the backdrop. Stop in at Pillar Point harbor and check the fishing boats for the latest catch just in time for dinner. If you’re adventurous rent a kayak and tool around the harbor or beyond the breakwater where you can do plenty of sea bird watching and the sunsets are heaven.

There’s so much to do here and most of it doesn’t cost a penny.  So enjoy life at the coast;  it’s amazing every single day! And, don’t forget Fall is just around the corner.  That means the most beautiful time of the year at the coast.  It is the best kept coastside secret,  but I’m not that great at keeping secrets so here goes.  Fall and Winter are the best times to come to the coast. Just when you think summer is over, it’s not.  It’s just beginning on the San Mateo coastline.

Book your reservations now and find out for yourself just how exciting it is to stay and play on the California coastline, our little paradise right here in San Mateo County.
